Holocaust

So on the 27th of January 1945, the Russians first arrived in Berlin. And that was the beginning of freedom, the start of the end.

I didn’t have my blog at the time, but before I permanently moved to Italy, my parents and I were on “holiday”. We were in Abu Dhabi, and from there went to Amsterdam. We were only in Amsterdam for three days I think, but in that short time, we did what I wanted to do most, and visited the Anne Frank House.

For those of you who don’t know who Anne Frank is (I would think most of you know of her).. Anne was born on the 12th of June 1929 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. She and her family were Jews. Anne and her family proceed to move to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. They will live “happily” for a while at least, her father creates a business and Anne will continue to make friends. The go into hiding on the morning of the 6th of July 1942 in the top part of her father’s company’s building, (the Annexe). They will be cooped inside all day, every day, for around two years, until their trust becomes betrayed and they are taken to different concentration camps but all connected to Auschwitz. Anne and her sister will die of typhus.

Anne recorded everything in a red checked diary, given to her on her 13th birthday. After the Nazi have raided the Annexe, a helper of Otto Frank (Anne’s father), collects all the loose sheets of paper and the diary and keeps them in her desk drawer. When it becomes clear that Anne and her sister Margot have sadly passed away, Miep will give the papers to Otto who then proceeds to publish them. Anne’s greatest dream was to become a famous writer.

Anne Frank was just one of the victims of the crimes, the non-human acts that Adolf Hitler performed. Her story is just one. But one is all it takes. And yet today, there is still war, because humans are never going to agree. No one will ever just accept that we are all human, and can have our differences, believe in a different God, have different coloured skin..
